Alumnus Still in Touch with Brothers 68 Years Later

Thomas Gray ’48 recalls many memories from his days at the Kappa Sigma house, even 68 years after he left. He says he still keeps in touch with some of his brothers and shared a few of his favorite memories from the Gamma Xi chapter.

Thomas said that he, along with John Dill ’49 and Gordy Banks ’48, was in Denison’s Navy V-12 Officer Training Program. They returned to Denison after completing the program to earn their degrees.

His time at the Gamma Xi fraternity house was filled with memories that he won’t forget no matter how much time passes. “We lived in the old house on Broadway, which is now the Avery Downer Museum. I loved it, even though the shower water temperature abruptly changed when the toilet flushed,” he said. “We had one of the best, if not THE best chapter on campus.”

During his senior year, Thomas recalls the Star Dust Ball held in the old “Wigwam.” “A lot of party-crashers from the other frats who heard about it wanted to attend and did. Dancing started but didn’t last long because everyone wanted to crowd around the band stand to witness ‘Satchmo’s’ great performance,” he remembered.

Thomas said that many of these old memories come pouring out when he connects with his brothers. They get together on a regular basis, and he said, “I recently returned from a reunion with John and Gordy in Florida. Each of us have now passed our 90th birthdays, but we still get together every few years.”
