LTJG Gary Engels, USN
“Hi – I served in the US Navy – went to Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fl. – July 1968, shortly after my Denison graduation. Commissioned Officer Oct. 1968. I was the Asst. Aircraft Maintenance Officer. Patrol Squadron 50, Moffitt Field, Sunnyvale, Ca. We had 10 P-3B aircraft. We deployed to Naha, Okinawa and Cam Ranh Bay, Viet Nam in 1969. I left the Navy in 1970 as an Ltjg.”
William Haynor, Air Force Strategic Air Command
“After graduating from Denison University in 1963 I served in the Air Force Strategic Air Command as an Avionics/Intelligence officer from 1964 to 1968. I was stationed in Okinawa immediately after the Pueblo crisis in 1968 for six months and received a Viet Nam Combat Service Medal. My four years included: Assistant Maintenance Supervisor for a B52/KC135 squadron at Wurtsmith AFB, a Maintenance Supervisor for a Hound Dog Missile squadron at Wurtsmith AFB, and a Shift Maintenance Supervisor in Okinawa for B52’s/KC135’s and RC 135’s (early AWACS). I enjoyed my Air Force tour and was able to take advantage of the GI bill afterward to earn an MS in Aerospace Systems Management and an MBA in Finance at USC.”
2nd Lt. Robert Kabel, Army
“I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army in 1972 upon my graduation from Vanderbilt Law School. I served briefly in the Army before joining the Tennessee National Guard for a few years before moving to Washington, D.C.”
Capt. David Thomas, USAF
“I served in the US Air Force from 1967 through 1971. Attained the rank of Captain. Final year served in Thule Greenland. Awarded Air Force Commendation Medal in 1970.”
LTC Alan Brown, Naval Air Reserve
“Joined the Naval Air Reserve in 1961 to postpone active duty while I tried to finish my degree at LaSalle University. (Had left Denison after the first semester of my junior year to try my luck as an actor in NYC; an early example of several similar magnificent, lifelong decisions).
Applied for Navy flight training. Allergies and hay fever, etc. disqualified me. Considered being a Naval seagoing officer. Found out from a friend in the Navy that there was no drinking allowed on Navy ships. None. Zero. Nada. Decided to look elsewhere.
Finished my degree at LaSalle in 1963 and applied for Air Force OTS. Graduated as 2nd Lt from USAF-OTS in July 1964. Volunteered for Vietnam a year later (married with two sons by that time). Assigned 606 Air Commando Squadron at Nakhon-Phanom Air Base, Thailand in 1966.
Spent the next six years on active duty in the Air Force at various installations. Left active duty in 1972, joined the Air Force Reserve, returned to Vietnam assigned to Hqs 7AF in Saigon. Returned to PA in 1973 and joined the PA ANG. Spent the next 19 years in various ANG and USAFR assignments. Retired in 1992 as a Lt. Col.
Decided to try again at an acting career. Did better this time.
(Interestingly, was cast as Chairman of JCS (Army General, 4 stars!) in the TV series, “Commander-in-Chief”). Sent pictures of myself in the role to Hqs PA Air National Guard. Told them I had joined the Army after leaving the Air National Guard and had done rather well. They never replied.
My oldest son, Chris, retired as a Captain in the Naval Reserve several years ago. Guess he didn’t mind their abstinence rules.”
