Gamma-Xi Brothers Speak Up

In last month’s e-letter, we sent out a survey to our Gamma-Xi Alumni. Now, we’d like to share some of our favorite responses with you! If you want to answer these questions yourself, please CLICK HERE to take the survey. You may see your Gamma-Xi memories, photos or reflections published in a future newsletter or e-letter. We’d love to hear from all our Gamma-Xi Alumni! Here are your Brothers responses.

John Molander II ‘75

“The most valuable part of my Kappa Sig experience was the Brotherhood and an extended family.

During this pandemic we need to learn how to stay healthy and not panic. Hoarding is not the answer. Practice compassion and help your fellow man. Lead by example and stay active. I still work full time and enjoy all outdoor activities including fly fishing and tai chi.

At Denison you learn how to learn. You are exposed to new ideas and paths of learning. It gives you the tools to succeed.”

“The most valuable part of my Kappa Sig experience was the friends I made.

I think fewer people pledging is certainly in the future, and we need to adapt to this new reality.

I am currently in contact with Wait, DiTirro, Russell, English, and of course my son, William Curto.

I am semi-Retired from my assisted living community’s leadership.”

John E. Brewer ‘70

“My fraternity experience was part of my college years.  I valued the friendships, living together and self governing, and leadership opportunities

Fraternity for me now is the friendships that remain.

I am currently in contact with Dave Webb, Rip Gellein, Jeff Smith, Chuck Bridges, Bill Hewins, Geof Kusch, Dave Skowonek, Bill Burling, and Dale Markworth.

I retired as a Family Doctor in 2014. I spend winters in Aiken SC. Summers were in Buffalo until last year when we moved to Madison Wi to be near our children.”

“I loved life in the lodge at Denison. I made life-long friends, experienced running a household (weekly cleaning, managing a budget, learning to live with others), and was part of a social environment in which I met and courted my wife of 4 years.

I’m in touch with Doug Williamson in Dallas, TX.  I’d like to reconnect with Jim Curto in Minnesota, Gary Tober, Tom Wait in San Francisco, and Peter Porteous.

BJ (Barb Novak) and I are still married 47 years after graduation.  After law school (her) and grad school (me) we ended up in Washington, D.C., where we both had long careers, her at Justice and Interior, and me at IBM.  Retired three years ago to a life of gardening, hiking, reading, opera, and travel.  We will become grandparents in July.”

John Layman ‘71

“The friendships I developed at Denison have lasted a lifetime. I still see Dave Fogle, Whit Carman and Gary Conover, and I look forward to seeing other friends at the 50th reunion in 2021.

I’d like to reconnect with all of the members of my class.  Names that come to mind are Jim Riordan, Bill Trough, Phil Zink, Gary Yaekle, Harry Gentithes, George Windhorst, Vince Hope, and many others I can’t think of right now.  Also friends from other classes such as Jim Ronk and Rich Tapps.

The biggest event in my life recently has been the birth of our fourth grandchild – a girl named Anna, born February 29.  Our other three grandchildren are boys so the birth of a granddaughter is extra special.”
