RE: Outcome following conduct hearing that occurred on May 5, 2010
Dear James:
This letter outlines the outcome of the administrative conduct hearing regarding your organization’s alleged violation of the Student Code of Conduct on April 16, 2010. During the meeting, your organization admitted responsibility to B9a (registration of campus events), B9b (use of alcohol during an organization event), and B9k (drinking games during an organization event). Your organization denied responsibility for all the other alleged violations. After careful deliberation on the information collected during the hearing, I find you additionally responsible for violation of B9e (coordination of the purchase of alcohol by organization members during a function). As a result of your responsibility, the following sanctions are imposed and are expected to be completed by the deadlines assigned:
- 1.Probationary status. Kappa Sigma is hereby on probation through fall 2010. Any further violation of Denison policy as it relates to organizational behavior could jeopardize the standing of the colony with Denison.
- 2.Program requirement. Your organization is expected to participate in an educational risk management program, at a time to be determined, sponsored by the Student Activities Office. It is required that the entire membership (100%) participate in this program.
- 3.Program requirement. With at least a chapter adviser present and Ms. Katelin Getz, Kappa Sigma is expected to engage as a chapter around a dialogue about alcohol, serenades, and individual and chapter responsibility as it relates to these topics, and other associated risk management areas. The learning outcome for the chapter is an improved understanding of how individual behavior impacts chapter standing and accountability at Denison, and with the national organization. I would encourage you to work closely with Ms. Getz to design a good topical outline to assist you with that dialogue.
- 4.Restricted Privilege. As a condition of your organization’s probation status, Kappa Sigma is restricted from coordinating or participating in any alcohol events one week prior to and through three days after any serenade-related activity involving Kappa Sigma or its members.
You may file a written appeal to the University Appeals Board if you wish to challenge this decision on one or more of the grounds for appeal noted in the student code. The Appeals Board has the authority to modify this decision and can increase or decrease the sanctions imposed, as determined to be appropriate, so please consider your decision to appeal carefully. If you choose to submit an appeal, it should be addressed to the Appeals Board and delivered to the Office of Community Rights and Standards located in Doane Hall. Your appeal must be full and complete upon submission, and shall be due no later than September 3, 2010 at 4:00 PM. Be advised that the Appeals Board will not consider appeals that are submitted late. Specific information relating to the appeal process can be found in Section IV.K. of the Student Code of Conduct. Sanctions remain pending until such time as the normal appeal process has concluded.
If you have any questions, I invite you to contact me at (740) 587-6394.
Sincerely,
