Why did you join Kappa Sigma?
“The main reason I joined Kappa Sig was the opportunity to become a founding father. No other fraternity was able to offer such a prestigious and rare opportunity. However, at first I was reluctant to join because of the negative image I had of the Greek life community at Denison pre-Kappa Sig, but we talked as a group about the chance we had to change that image and make a difference on campus.
How do you think the reinstallation process changed you?
The reinstallation process was difficult, but it made me a better person and brother. Not many people get to witness the amount of work it takes to start from scratch, and I think this is one of the biggest differences between Kappa Sig and all the other fraternities at Denison. Many pledges just have their organization given to them, but we had to build it ourselves which made it more distinguished to us. Furthermore, after being pledged in I realized all of my actions from that point on represented the entirety of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, so I tried to live by the Star and Crescent on a day-to-day basis. As a colony, we had no prior relationships as a fraternity, good or bad, with any staff, faculty, or student on campus, so it was our goal from day one to keep the fraternity in high standing with the campus.
As a graduating senior, what advice might you give to the next incoming class of actives?
“Doing community service activities early in the year is a great way to get some solid hours in and catch up with brothers after a summer apart, and there are generally less Greek life events happening first semester, so it is a good way to get a jump start on philanthropic events.”
Do you think your experience as a Kappa Sigma has better prepared you for life?
“Yes, my experience as a Kappa Sig has better prepared me for post-college life. First, it has opened up a network of career possibilities for me, as well as an invaluable network of support for the many challenges of life. Also, the re-colonization process has helped me build leadership skills that will definitely help in the real world.”
