02-27-13 5:08 pm I came into the office & saw a male, later identified as
(member name redacted), speaking with Dispatcher Lee. I heard Dispatcher Lee tell him she was sorry but we could not let him in. Dispatcher Lee came back after the male left & told me (member name redacted) was trying to get into the Kappa Sigma lodge & that the access system had been shut off. Dispatcher Lee said she had confirmed this with Natalie Pariano. 02-27-13 5:17 pm a door alarm was received from Kappa Sigma. 02-27-13 5:19 pm a student called to say there was a loud alarm sounding in the Kappa Sigma residence hall. This indicated someone had entered the lodge space through the residence hall emergency exit door. 02-27-13 5:21 pm I arrived at the Kappa Sigma lodge. As I approached the entrance door I heard someone playing pool. I keyed into the lodge & found 3 males by the pool table. All the lights were on in the lodge area & the TV was also on. (member name redacted) was one of the males. The other two males were identified as (member name redacted) & (member name redacted). I asked them what they were doing. They said they needed clothes & could not wait until the next day to get them. I told the males an email had been sent out to
their president & (member name redacted) said I know but we did not receive one. I told (member name redacted) he had just been told this when he was in our office. They then said that is why they waited till I arrived so that I would know they were not doing anything wrong. All three were cooperative with me. I then had them leave the lodge. They left with dry cleaning & other laundry. I then went through lodge area & checked the rooms, turned off the lights & the TV. I then armed the intruder alarm. I went up to the residence hall & reset the audible alarm. When I came back to the office Lee told me that (member name redacted) had called her asking to be let into the lodge. This was prior to (member name redacted) coming into the office. She informed (member name redacted) of the same thing she told (member name redacted). I had Dispatcher Lee notify Pariano about the incident. Officer Smith Narative: On 02/27/13 at 08:50 pm Kappa Sigma chapter lodge intruder alarm activated. A check of the lodge was completed with no person(s) found inside. The window in a small storage room on the west side was found open and a section of the window well metal grate had been lifted off outside. Debris in the bottom of the well was disturbed to a point that it appears a person had laid down and crawled in the window. A section of a second window well metal grate had been lifted off and boot prints were visible in the debris at the bottom. I secured the open window and replaced both sections of grating over the window wells. At 10:06 pm Kappa Sigma Chapter lodge intruder alarm activated. Monitor Cole arrived first, with myself, Officer Baldwin, Officer Roach and Sgt. McOsker all arriving later. A check of the lodge was completed with no person(s) found inside. It was determined the person(s) had accessed the window grate and well area outside the window in the mechanical / laundry room. The person reached through a 5-6 inch in diameter hole in the metal covering over the window frame and unlatched the window latch. The air vent pipe which introduces fresh air into the room while the boilers are running had been dislodged and lying on the floor. While checking the lodge, it appeared nothing was disturbed from the other times we had been in the lodge before. Physical Plant employees, Nick Shaw and Troy Cottrell secured the window in the mechanical / laundry room. A piece of metal was wedged in the locking levelers of the mechanical / laundry room door to deny access into the lodge area if a person does gain access through the window again. Contact was made with Chief Garret Moore and Vice President for Student Development Laurel Kennedy for approval to search the entire lodge area,
including a locked hidden closet behind the wall in the billards room. We were trying to determine what the unknown person(s) was trying to access by going to such extremes to gain entry into the lodge. Permission was granted, a search was completed of the lodge and the lock of the hidden closet was unlocked successfully and entry gained. Items observed in the closet was ceremonal in nature, including candles, blind fold and swords. A single subject college rulled notebook was found which contained what appears to be pledge ritual information, activities and tests. A date of Thursday 1/25/96 was found on one of the pages. Two DVD video disks (Kappa Sigma Fraternity; Journey and Explanatory Lecture) were found on top of a cabinet in the billards room. A black plastic bag of candles was found in the conference room. An empty bottle of Labatt Blue beer was observed on the table in the ceremony room. All these items were placed on Chief Moore’s desk for reviewing, except for the ceremony swords which was left in the closest. Update 022813 Garret Moore I went to the Kappa Sigma Lodge to make sure nothing was left that had not been discovered and located a GForce Wireless Base Station and a Cisco Aironet 1200 series Wireless Access Point in a cupboard in one of the back rooms. I contacted Kent King to confirm these items belong to Denison and he said the items are equipment we do use at Denison and we would have to check the serial numbers to confirm ownership. I took the items to the Security Office for King to examine. King confirmed that the items did belong to Denison. He took custody of the items.
